The specialization “Science and Philosophy” offers a three year doctoral program after the termination of the license cycle. The scope of the doctorate is to study and contribute to the development of the fundamental issues that are at the confines between science and philosophy and that are in general of interest to both disciplines.

The doctorate is normally concentrated on research in the following fields: physics and philosophy of physics, biology and philosophy of biology and cognitive sciences. It is also possible to undertake a cross sectional study in which the student studies in overlapping areas, which in any case must be approved by the director of the specialisation.

Admission to the doctoral cycle is granted by the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy upon submission of a curriculum vitae which outlines the students previous studies. The requisites for admission are that a student must have the title of Licentiate in Philosophy at the Gregorian Pontifical University or another Ecclesiastical University with at least a part of the license devoted to the study of science and philosophy. The doctoral program is open to students of other universities provided that the meet these minimum requirements.

The specialization in Science and Philosophy offers two scholarships to students amounting to 9,000 euros annually.

The scholarship can be granted for one, two or three years. The scholarship is granted over subsequent years providing that the student makes the appropriate application and upon the approval of the directors of the specialization.

These scholarships are assigned on the basis of the academic titles that a student holds and an oral exam that is to be held in September, before the commencement of the academic year. The scholarships can be assigned to any student form any country or institution on the condition that he or she meet these requirements. The scholarships are also open to students who wish to study for one single year and who are undertaking further studies or who are part of a co-tutorial or cross-institutional program of doctoral study.

All documentation must be sent by post or consigned in person to the secretary of the specialisation from the 1 to the 30 June each year.

The candidate must request admission at the Secretary’s Office of the Faculty, and only after the positive response of this Faculty is the candidate permitted to pursue the subsequent steps at the Secretary’s Office of the Specialisation in Science and Philosophy.
