Rules of behaviour
 
Admission to the areas of the Library depends upon compliance with rules that are meant to maintain an atmosphere of study and research.
 
Therefore, it is forbidden to:
  • speak or study in a loud voice, or to disturb others in any way;
  • smoke;
  • bring food or drink into the Library;
  • use noisy electronic devices (walkman, radio, cell phone);
  • reserve periodicals and works available in the Reading Rooms or among the Reference Books for particular courses with the weekend Maneat;
  • hide, reserve with the Maneat slips for more than two (2) weeks, or remove from the Library books and periodicals;
  • retain longer than necessary dictionaries or other such works of frequent use that are available in the Reading Rooms or among the Reference Books for particular courses;
  • return books and periodicals to the shelves of the Reading Rooms in a disorderly manner or to the wrong place;
  • misuse furniture, equipment, or surrounding areas (by sitting on tables, stairs, window sills) or impede other users' ability to fully utilize the available space;
  • use electronic resources for ends other than bibliographic consultation on-line or from CD-ROMs; specifically, it is forbidden to use email, to navigate the Internet or other nets with intentions other than the consultation of bibliographic instruments, or to tamper for any reason with the arrangement of the software or the hardware equipment that is available to users;
  • use the areas, machinery, or the various resources of the Library in ways other than those intended;
  • alter the posted signs that indicate the location of materials;
  • change the arrangement or location of tables and other equipment; enter the closed stacks; enter staff offices or areas without authorization; or use the equipment and materials needed by the staff to fulfill their duties;
  • conduct oneself, personally or in a group, in a manner that does not conform to the decorum of the Institution;
  • users are requested to be discrete in their behavior and respectable in their attire.
 
The sanctions against those who do not comply with the above norms, according to the gravity of the infractions and/or recurrences, are: a verbal warning; a written warning; temporary expulsion; and, ultimately, definitive expulsion from the Library.

The Staff welcomes suggestions of ways to improve services and eliminate inconveniences. Such proposals and reminders should be directed to the proper officials who will respond promptly.
