Objectives: By a close reading and discussion of St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Autobiography and his Rules for the Discernment of Spirits as found in his Spiritual Exercises, the student will come to understand Ignatius’ Rules for the Discernment of Spirits as Ignatius himself learned them in his life. In so doing, the student will learn how to identify and discern the different spirits in his/her own life. Content: A close reading and in-class discussion of St. Ignatius’ Autobiography and his Rules for the Discernment of Spirits as presented in the Spiritual Exercises. Methodology: Careful reading of the Autobiography and the Rules in and outside of class along with in-class discussion of the texts. Criteria of Evaluation: Quality of class participation and a final eight to ten page paper on the student’s own experience of discernment of spirits in his/her life.
