In Memory - Fr. Jacquineau Azétsop, S.J.

On Wednesday 13th October, Fr Jacquineau Azétsop S.J., Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, returned to the house of the Father. His funeral will be celebrated - together with that of Fr Linus Kujur, S.J. - on Saturday 16 October, at 10am, at the Church of St Ignatius in Rome . It will be possible to join in prayer at the ceremony in live streaming.

Last September, when his recovery from Covid-19 seemed complete, he underwent a delicate emergency operation following a cerebral thrombosis. The seriousness of his condition was evident in the days following the operation. "We have all witnessed the generosity with which Fr Azétsop led the Faculty of Social Sciences, without measuring energy or time in this mission that he lived with deep commitment and a great sense of responsibility," wrote the Rector in his Letter to the University Community. "At this sad time, my heartfelt condolences go out to the professors, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and to his family, as well as to all those who knew him and have a living memory of him. We entrust Fr Azétsop to the Lord, as an expression of our gratitude for his creative service to the Church and for his teaching in our University and in various institutions around the world".

Having arrived at the Pontifical Gregorian University in September 2014, where he began his first course on the topic of "Structural violence and HIV and AIDS", the following year Fr Azétsop was appointed Extraordinary Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Already a member of the Commission set up to reformulate the objectives of the Faculty, he was appointed Dean on 18 May 2016 and reappointed in 2019 for the following three years. Together with Fr. Fernando de la Iglesia Viguiristi, he was the promoter of the initiative to develop a proposal for an academic programme aimed at obtaining the Licentiate in Leadership and Management, an academic path inaugurated on 7 October last.
