In memory - Manuel Ruiz Jurado, S.J.

 

On 19 July 2022, Fr Manuel Ruiz Jurado S.J. passed away at the age of 91 and 60 years of priesthood. Having entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1948, Fr Ruiz Jurado was ordained a priest in Granada on 15 July. In Spain he obtained a Baccalaureate in Philosophy (1960), a Licentiate (1963) and a Doctorate (1971) in Theology.

In Rome he obtained a Diploma in the Superior School of Latin Letters at the Gregorian University (1966) and a Diploma in the Superior Institute of Pedagogy of the then Pontifical Salesian Athenaeum. He began teaching at the Gregoriana's Institute of Spirituality in 1976, later becoming Extraordinary Professor (1981), Ordinary Professor (1984) and Director of the Institute (1999), a role he held until his appointment as Professor Emeritus (2001). In 2001 he was appointed Consultor of the Historical Archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was also appointed several times as Consultor of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He finished teaching in 2005, returning to his Province in 2011.

In his long research and study activity, Fr. Ruiz Jurado has written over 40 monographic publications, all related to the theme of spirituality, the charism of St. Ignatius of Loyola and Ignatian spirituality. These include: A la luz del carisma ignaciano: estudios sobre san Ignacio de Loyola y la Compañía de Jesús (Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Madrid, 2015); Bases teológicas de los ejercicios Ignacianos (Centro de espiritualidad Ignaciana, Santiago del Chile, 2010) and El discernimiento espiritual: Teología. Historia. Práctica (Biblioteca de autores cristianos,
Madrid, 1994).

We join in communion of prayer in giving thanks to the Lord for the intellectual commitment and dedication of Fr. Ruiz Jurado during his years of teaching and research at our University.
