ARTICULI

In the second half of the 4th Century the Early Christian visual culture was enriched with the creation of a new image, so called ‘traditio legis’, on which archaeologists and Art historians continue to reflect. Considering the context when the theme is primarily attested, i.e. the pontificates of Damasus and Siricius, the essay is focused on the figurative elements of ‘traditio legis’ to suggest the hypothesis that the representation was inspired by a passage from the book of Jeremiah 31,31-34.

Ottavio Bucarelli - Pasquale I a S. Stefano Maggiore in Vaticano

The essay presents the first unpublished results of the investigation carried out in Santo Stefano Maggiore (or degli Abisssini), within the extensive work aimed at the census of the epigraphs of the Vatican area, conducted by the Author. The investigation of the semi-annular crypt of Santo Stefano has made it possible to identify the presence of epigraphic and architectural spolia that escaped the observations of Gustavo Giovannoni and the other scholars who studied the monument; all elements of reuse used in the construction or restoration of the crypt that are here illustrate. The survey was also an occasion for further considerations on the events concerning the heavy restorations carried out by Giovannoni at the Santo Stefano complex.

Gábor Nemes - Cardinal Pietro Isvalies, the Bishop of Veszprém

During his Hungarian legate between 1501 and 1503 Cardinal Isvalies spent his time negotiating concerning an anti-Turkish coalition. But also organised the matters of the jubilee for the benefit of a possible crusade. Both the cardinal’s benefices, including the episcopacy of Veszprém, the abbacy of Pécsvárad and Szekszárd, and his office of the cardinal protector in Rome for the Jagellonian  kingdoms resulted in his surviving connections to Hungary even after he moved back to Italy.

Leon X creates the cardinal de Boisy legate a latere in France in 1519-1520. Adrien Gouffier receives a bull of faculties, controlled and registered by the parliaments, that allows him to exercise a gracious jurisdiction during his one-year embassy. Two registers of bulls, now held at the National Archives (Paris), bring out his chancery’s practices and the extent of his powers, shortly after the Concordat of Bologna.

Emilia Hrabovec - Pio XI e la crisi di Monaco

On a wide range of archival sources, particularly the documents of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, the paper reconstructs the position of Pope Pius XI and the decision making processes of the Vatican diplomacy during the Munich crisis 1938. Besides the political processes, it also takes into consideration the religious perspective of the supreme authority of the Catholic Church, often ignored in exclusively diplomatic histories.

NOTAE

Matteo Sanfilippo - I papi sullo schermo

Between the last decade of 2019 and the first of 2020, The Two Popes, directed by Fernando Meirelles, and the initial episodes of The New Pope, the second season of the Italian-French-Hispanic-American series created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino, have been distributed worldwide. The dual event attracted a lot of publicity and prompted many discussions. The echo of this debate suggests that the relationship between the popes and the screen, so far only partially discussed by critics since the reasoned filmography appeared in this magazine in 1981, must be addressed again.

The legislation of Sixtus V concerning the College of Cardinals appears as a crucial junction in the history of relations between the pope and the cardinal Senate that began with the western Schism. It intersects the development of government techniques introduced from the 14th century and the reform demands agitated in the late Middle Ages in order to affirm the centrality of papal power and a new model of Church and Ecclesiastical State government.

Gigliola Fragnito - La Congregazione dell’Indice

My essay La Congregazione dell’Indice illustrates the Roman Church’s attitude towards culture from the middle ages to the execution of the third Index, promulgated by Clement VIII in 1596. It reconstructs the origins of the Roman institutions in charge of control over printing and readers (Congr. of the Holy Office, Congr. of the Index, Master of the Sacred Palace) and highlights their high level of conflictuality, together with their contradictory strategies and their consequences.

The essay provides an overview of the institutional organization and jurisdictional functioning of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide. At first it discusses how it was chosen to create a single congregation that deals with all the missions worldwide, compared to other models tested between the 16th and early 17th centuries. Then it outlines the mechanisms of governance and the institutional figures in charge. Finally, it studies the relationship between Propaganda and the other congregations of the Pontifical Curia.

Massimo Carlo Giannini - La Congregazione dell’Immunità ecclesiastica

The Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity was born in the context of the jurisdictional conflicts of the first forty years of the Seventeenth century, in response to solicitations coming mainly from the ecclesiastics of the Italian Peninsula. Its origin  was affected by the uncertainties of the Papal Curia about the way to deal with the problem of Immunity. It is no coincidence that the coagulation of the competencies of the Congregation continued to create overlaps and intersections of jurisdiction, both competitive and collaborative with other Congregations (of the Council, the Bishops and Regulars, the Council and Buon Governo).

The business congregations of France from the end of the 16th century to the end of the following century (1589-1594, 1640, 1677-1692) were inspired by very heterogeneous objects. Apart from the reference to France, there is no continuity and kinship between them. The article examines their participants, their procedures and focuses on the management of information and secrecy during the years 1692-1692 within a congregation that constituted a strong element of the informal policy of the Roman Curia.
