Future students - who do not belong to the European Community - can request a "pre-registration" certificate from the Registrar's Office which allows them to apply for the "Entry visa and stay in Italy for reasons of study". In Italy it is not allowed to change the tourist visa in student visa.

The "pre-registration" certificate must be authenticated by the Congregation for Catholic Education and authenticated by the Secretariat of State. To obtain the "pre-registration" certificate, the following documents must be presented to the Dean of the Faculty to which you intend to enroll:

For religious and diocesan candidates:

For lay candidates:

  • Qualifications and marks obtained during the studies previously carried out as photocopies (at the time of enrollment the original of the academic qualifications must be handed over to the Registrar's Office).
  • Letter of presentation from the Religious Superior or from the local Ordinary.
  • The declaration of responsibility or "taking charge" of the Institute or of the private individual that guarantees the payment of food, lodging and possible health expenses during the period of stay in Italy, or the certification of the scholarship obtained including the costs of food and accommodation or a document certifying the possibility of staying personally for study and living expenses.
  • Photocopy of an identity document.
  • Indication of domicile in Rome during studies. Students belonging to the secular clergy (seminarians or priests) must testify in the Colleges or Institutes of Rome assigned to them, whose list appears in the Pontifical Yearbook. All those who do not live in the aforementioned Colleges or Institutes must present the certification of the recognition of the ministerial faculties issued by the Vicariate of Rome.

    • The statement of responsibility or "taking charge" of the Institute or the private individual who guarantees the payment of board and lodging and any medical expenses during the period of stay in Italy, or the certification of the scholarship obtained including the cost of board and lodging accommodation or a document certifying the chance to earn oneself for the costs of study and stay.

The Dean, if positively assessed the documents received, asks the General Secretariat to draw up the "pre-registration" certificate. Requests received after July 15th will be dealt with at the reopening of administrative activities in September. For more information or to present special cases, contact the Registrar’s Office.
