Visiting Scholars

Faculty of Philosophy Visiting Scholars are established academics who wish to undertake research in Rome in collaboration with this Faculty. They are usually professors or lecturers holding a permanent teaching post at a university, or at a similar institution of higher learning, who desire to spend a period ranging normally from one to six months in Rome for research purposes.

No financial support is offered to the Visiting Scholars, but successful applicants will have access to the University Library, to the internet and to workspace if available. Visiting Scholars are responsible for ensuring that they have fulfilled all the necessary legal, immigration and other requirements for entry and for their stay in Italy.

During their stay, Visiting Scholars are normally expected to attend and participate in the Faculty Research Seminars, to present a research paper and to give a lecture to a wider university audience. They are also expected to give appropriate acknowledgement to the Faculty of Philosophy in publications or presentations resulting from their appointment.

To support their application, those applying to become Visiting Scholars can make prior contact with a member of the Faculty who will act as their academic sponsor. Normally, such a sponsor is one of the fulltime Faculty professors.

To apply, please send the following information by email to the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy ([email protected]). This information can be in any of the major languages in use at the university (Italian, English, Spanish, French).

  • (a) Personal details and the provisional dates for your stay in Rome, keeping in mind that, at the Gregorian University, the first semester runs from early October till late January and the second from mid-February till early June.
  • (b) A short CV of not more than four pages.
  • (c) A covering letter outlining your research project. (d) The name of the academic sponsor (this is optional).

When deliberating whether a candidate is acceptable, the Dean’s Council will consider the academic standing of applicants, the quality of their work, and the extent to which their work will enhance the academic life of the Faculty.
