FS2440  ARISTOTELE, "NICOMACHEAN ETHICS" (A.A. 2023/2024)

Obiettivi: The objective of the seminar will be the student’s comprehensive grasp of the argument of the NE as practical philosophy dealing with living a life of happiness through virtuous action within the political community.

Contenuti: As practical philosophy is concerned with human action, especially virtuous action, the seminar will help the students grasp the nature and point of such action: the happiness of living well with others and with oneself. Special attention will be given to the nature of human happiness achieving that happiness in the acquisition and practice of the virtues, especially the moral virtues of temperance, courage, and justice, culminating in a life with friends who practice virtue together by taking responsibility for each other and for others in their community.

Metodologia: The seminar will involve the students’ participation in preparing the material for each session, taking turns in presenting the material to the other members of the seminar and then leading discussion. The topics covered in the seminar will be the main topics of the NE: the nature of human happiness, the challenge of dealing well with pleasures and pains in life, the acquisition and practice of the moral virtues, especially temperance, courage, and justice, the nature and place of practical wisdom in living well and finally the nature and importance of friendship in living well,

Modalità di valutazione: The students will be evaluated on the quality of their participation (preparing the material, presenting the material as seminar leader and leading discussion) and in a six page paper on their own synthesis of the matrial covered in the seminar: the Aristotelian understanding ot happiness as human realization.
