MP009E  HISTORICAL SHIFTS IN MISSION (A.A. 2023/2024)

Objectives : The church, guided by the Holy Spirit, in carrying out its missionary activity throughout history, has made various changes in the way of evangelizing according to the historical context in which it was located. The course will present the historical journey of the missionary church which requires a reading of historiography that goes beyond the chronology of events and important figures and instead will deepen the turning points that took place in evangelization that changed the meaning and missionary practice, especially in modern era. This course will highlight the key turning points, thus helping to start a new process of reading the history of the mission. The course will focus on the main themes contained in the missionary experience of the time and will show how such insights can have an impact on the missionary reform of the church today.

Contents: The course will deal with the breakthroughs in evangelization in the modern era in three complementary and integrated stages: 1) consider some selected and emblematic examples of evangelization; 2) extracting missiological turning points from emblematic examples with particular attention to creative paradigms, which involves describing the hermeneutics of continuity and discontinuity; 3) underline the significance of the breakthroughs that have taken place in the current historical context for the missionary reform of the church today. The reading of the history of the missions specifically in the context of evangelization, will be, starting from the missiological perspective, in dialogue with historical methods without taking a single historiography as a discipline.

Methodology: In addition to the presentation of the main themes, the course will have other moments in which students can ask themselves questions and share ideas in the spirit of an intercultural dialogue.

Means of evaluation: At the end of the course, students will be required to write a paper.
