PO2026  DARK NIGHT AND DEPRESSION (A.A. 2023/2024)

Objectives: The seminary offers theoretical reflections to help understanding of mystical texts and written reports of the mystical path in life experience. Concrete written expressions in which those experiences and their realization are integrated will also be studied.

Content : “Dark night” has entered into the spiritual vocabulary. People will talk of suffering a dark night when going through some interior crisis. However, what did these words mean in the Christian spiritual tradition and for St. John of the Cross? How do they relate to depression and what is the difference? Is there also the possibility of an “institutional” Dark Night of the Church as Karl Rahner supposed? The course will discuss these questions and will provide some assistance for discernment and Spiritual Direction.

Teaching Method: Lectures, working with texts, group sharing, and group discussion.
  Method of Evaluation:
Learning will be evaluated through a paper, as indicated at the beginning of the course.
