COMPARATIVE TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY (A.Y. 2023/2024)
Objectives: Exploring the trinitarian theology in the Eastern Christian tradition and reflecting upon its ecclesiological understanding. The course aims at studying some significant texts from Orthodox heritage, classical as well as modern.The course consists of a lecture and an interactive discussion on a theme of the week.
Content: 1- The Trinitarian theology in the Cappadocean Fathers: Gregory the Theologian on Three and One; Gregory of Nyssa on Not Three Gods. 2- The Trinitarian vision in Maximus the Confessor: the Mystagogiaand Chapters on Knowledge. 3- The Trinitarian theology in the twentieth Century Orthodoxy: Bulgakov and the Paris School of Theology. 4- The Trinitarian Theology and Personhood in John Zizioulas and Dimitru Staniloae. 5- Kallistos Ware on Grace of the Triune God manifested in God’s creation; Hesychasm and Gregory Palamas. 6- Deification in the prism of the Trinitarian and Christological perspectives
Methodology: to explore and reflect upon the interaction between trinitarian theologies and the ethical and ecclesiological understandings of different Christian confessions.
Means of evaluation: the study of specific texts from Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant writers of the 20th and 21st centuries; a lecture and a seminar style discussion each week.
