Alumnus Moisés Lira Serafín will be beatified

 

On 14 December 2023, the Holy Father authorised the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the Decree of Beatification of Moisés Lira Serafín, professed priest of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and founder of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity of Mary Immaculate.

Born in Zacatlán (Mexico) on 16 September 1893, the young Moisés entered the Seminary in Puebla (1914). In 1922 was ordained a priest and took perpetual vows with the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Appointed novice master, he was transferred to Mexico City, where he devoted himself with special care to the prisoners. During the religious persecution (1926) he formed groups of acolytes and catechists. In 1927 he enrolled in the Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University to study biblical Greek.

In 1934 he founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity of Mary Immaculate with the mission of helping all men to live as children loved by God. He died on 25 June 1950 in Mexico City.
