In memory - Msgr. Peter Henrici, S.I.

 

 

Msgr. Peter Henrici, S.I. passed away on Tuesday 6 June. Born in Zurich on 31 March 1928, Peter Henrici entered the Society of Jesus in 1947 and was ordained a priest in 1958 in Zug.

From 1960 to 1993 he was Professor of Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University, teaching the courses "History of Modern Philosophy" and "Philosophy of Historicity", and also becoming Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. He also taught "Introduction to Metaphysics" at the then active Institute of Religious Sciences, and founded and supervised the Postgraduate Curriculum in Philosophical Issues of the Christian Religion, and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Social Communications (CICS). In his long career, he has directed more than 60 doctoral theses; his writings include some 30 volumes and more than 300 articles.

Following his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Chur and Vicar General with residence in Zurich (31 May 1993), he became Professor Emeritus. A member of the Presidium of the Swiss Bishops' Conference from 1998 to 2003, he has been Bishop Emeritus since 5 February 2007. Bishop Henrici has never abandoned his research work and has returned to the Gregorian University at various conferences. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, he was invited by the Faculty of Philosophy to give a commemorative lecture - "Because all my philosophical life I have been interested in Maurice Blondel" - during which he also shared several autobiographical notes.
