Democrazia, libertà e Bene Comune: il "paradosso" di Maritain.

In the classic "The Person and the Common Good," Jacques Maritain brings into focus a provocative political paradox: "The person as a person asks to serve the community and the common good freely, and, as an individual, he is forced to serve the community and the common good by necessity." The balance between freedom and compulsion, between rights and duties in democratic society is linked to the possibility of harmonizing divergent inner drives that are typical of human beings. Maritain's keys invite reflection on the resources and fragilities of democracy, challenged by opposing tensions toward authoritarianism and social fragmentation, and entrusted to the maturity of citizens.
