Diritti al futuro

World crises, migration, and a new idea of citizenship

In recent years, global problems have come to the world's attention that are not yet on the agendas of national governments, even though the very future of humanity depends on addressing them in a timely manner. From pandemic to war, from energy crisis to food crisis, from climate change to migration phenomena, our present and future horizon is marked. To base our democracies and maintain our standard of living on inequality in the rest of the world, on the power of arms, on the ecologically unsustainable development of our economies is only a dangerous illusion.

In Europe, 2022 was the year of the insane war unleashed by the Russian Federation. Europe's response was full support for the Ukrainian people. "If this was the year of the war, we must concentrate our efforts so that 2023 is the year of the end of hostilities, of the silencing of weapons, of the halting of this inhuman trail of blood, of death, of suffering," said President Mattarella in his end-of-year address.

Acknowledging complexity, exercising responsibility for choices, confronting the limits imposed by a reality increasingly characterized by global phenomena is what the time we are living is imposing on us.

I meeting - Tuesday, May 16 - 5-6:30 p.m.

From the world the cry of young people for freedom
The hope for peace is based on the strength of freedom, the will to affirm the civilization of rights and a renewed idea of solidarity that wants us to be one human family. This is witnessed by the young women of Iran, with their courage; the Afghan women fighting for their freedom; the young people of Belarus who defy government repression in the name of democracy; the migrants fleeing war and persecution who stubbornly seek their future in an increasingly closed and rejecting Europe.
