"Although the Second Vatican Council ushered in a new era in the Church's relations with other religions, the opening of pontifical universities to non-Catholic students has been gradually realized. In the past, it was rare for Muslim students to choose pontifical universities to further their study of Christianity. Yet, in the early 1990s, the experience of a Muslim student at the Gregorian perfectly embodied the ideal of a religious encounter based on mutual respect and mutual enrichment."
