MP012E  NEW EVANGELIZATION: CHALLENGES AND POSSIBILITIES (A.Y. 2023/2024)

  • Accademic Unit
    Faculty of Missiology
  • Course
    Renewal Program for Missionaries

Objectives: The course will explore evangelization in contemporary cultures that might be described as secular, post-secular and of post-Christendom. It aims to help students understand more deeply the changing conditions of faith in many contemporary cultures, as well as to engage in theological and missiological reflection on possible missionary responses of the Church.

Contents: The first part of the course will seek to understand the context of contemporary secular and post-secular cultures. Drawing on the thought of Charles Taylor, Jose Casanova and Hans Joas, among others, it will explore the different meanings and dimensions of secularization; the end of Christendom, in which Christianity enjoyed cultural dominance and privilege; and the rise of post-institutional or non-institutional spiritualities, on the one hand, and identitarian forms of religion, on the other. The second part of the course will explore the possibilities of mission in these secular and post-Christendom contexts. After a study of New Testament models of evangelization, it will explore the purification of the way Christians speak of God today, and engage in theological and missiological reflection on the themes of witness, beauty, and gift as possible paths toward renewed evangelization.

Methodology: Lectures, in constant dialogue with the students.

Means of evaluation: Final paper.
