On Friday, 5 January 2024, Prof. Paolo Benanti (Faculty of Theology) was appointed chairman of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence for Information. The Commission is a body of the Department for Information and Publishing of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (Italy). Last 26 October, Prof. Benanti had been called to join the High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence of the United Nations.

Asked about his new appointment, Prof. Benanti said: 'The rapid and global development of artificial intelligence has taken most people by surprise. This fast-changing scenario is, in fact, an interdisciplinary process that questions different skills and disciplines, bringing numerous crisis factors and new stimuli to the table. The field of publishing and information is vital to the life of a democratic system. At a time when the 'machine' can be a tool for storytelling and shaping public opinion, it is crucial to guarantee the space for democratic discussion and the value of journalism with ethical guard rails'.
