TRCS04  SACRED SPACES: PERCEPTION FROM THE PANTHEON TO RICHARD MEIER (A.A. 2023/2024)

Objectives: This course provides an introduction to the complex process of the perception of the Sacred Space. Through studying different sacred spaces from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary, students will become familiar with a range of theoretical and methodological strategies for the study of the perception, and to be capable of critical analysis. At the end it should be educated a sincere look, contributing to the formation of the knowledge of perception. Thus, they will become able to see the whole.

Contents: How can we see the sacred space? Every topic will be explored in each of the three ways of knowing of the Sacred space: an intellectual approach to a specific theology, the experience of a sacred space which is inspired by this theology and at the end to see both together. The topics: Saint Augustine and the Byzantine Icon; Thomas of Aquinas and Fra Angelico; Saint Ignatius and Pozzo; Therese of Avila and Caravaggio; John of the Cross and Bill Viola, John Paul II and Richard Meier.

Methodology : Interactive lessons and space for questions and discussions. The students will have a weekly written homework assignment. The final evaluation will consist of a written paper.
Means of evaluation: Students are expected to arrive to class having read the assigned texts and be prepared to answer questions raised by the instructor in class. Students are evaluated by weekly homework and class participation and discussion: 30%; Presentation of one specific sacred space: 30%. Written essay (40%). Attendance at all lectures and field trips is mandatory.
