Objectives: To articulate how becoming fully human requires observance of the natural moral law; to express how following Christ, as the Gospel of Mark explains this “way,” requires self-denial and grace in addition to the observance of the natural law; to explain how Christian virtue is similar to and different from pagan virtue, to apply the Ignatian principles of Christian discernment and election to one’s own life; to learn spiritual practices (examen prayer, Ignatian imagination).

Contents: What does it mean to be Christ’s disciple, to follow the God-become-man? What does it mean to fulfill human nature? How does following the Christ of the Gospels require us to go beyond what is merely natural? What is the Ignatian method of discerning one’s personal vocation to follow Christ? We will answer these questions and more as we examine Christian discipleship through four main lenses: the human way of natural law, the way of Christ in Mark’s Gospel, the Christian tradition of theological and cardinal virtues, and the Ignatian way of discernment and election.

Methodology : A mixture of lecture and discussion. Students will provide written responses to assigned reading prompts, which will serve as the basis for class discussion.

Means of evaluation: These will include responses to prompts for each class (20%), three unit essays (3 x 15%), one cumulative election essay (25%), and class participation/attendance (10%).
