Consultation and Loan

Consultation

The books kept in the reading rooms, mainly the works of major consultation, are on open shelves and therefore directly accessible to the users. Overall, they amount to about 50,000 books, whose call numbers start with one of the following abbreviations:

  • S.L.
  • SIDIC/S.L.
  • Arte

Volumes of the Course Reserves Service are also directly accessible in the dedicated room.

The entire Periodical Collection, to which are dedicated the entire Second Floor of the Library and the Sixth Floor of the Book Tower, is freely and directly accessible, with the exception of titles published before 1861, those belonging to Special Library Funds, and those of large format, which must be requested at the Distribution Desk.

Volumes placed in the depositories with call numbers Mag., FA, BEV, Fag., Soc., SIDIC, and Ved. must be requested in consultation by choosing between two possibilities:

  • selecting the volume directly on the Library online catalogue;
  • using the “Inserimento richieste” function on the moBi Web platform.

Users can request up to 12 volumes per day and requests can be sent 24 hours a day, even from outside the University Network. All requests sent after 5:01 p.m. will be processed the following day; the Service is suspended from Saturday at 11:01 a.m. to Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

Volumes of the Ancient and Rare Fund (call numbers Inc. and Ris.) must be requested in the same way but for a maximum of 3 volumes per day and must be consulted in the dedicated room.

Volumes belonging to the Wetter Fund (call number FW) and to the Hagiographic Fund (call number FA) must be requested at the Distribution Desk by filling out the special paper card.

Books are collected from depositories every 30 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; as soon as the volumes requested online are available, the user receives an e-mail and shall collect them at the Distribution Desk no later than 30 minutes before closure.

With the "Prenotazioni" function on moBi it is also possible to book a volume that has already been requested by another user.

A brief guide to the procedure of book request and handling is available in Italian.

Maneat

A maximum of 5 volumes per day can be retained in consultation using the “Maneat” function on moBi.
Only volumes kept in the depositories can be retained in consultation: it is not allowed to deposit volumes placed on open shelf (including periodicals and volumes of the Course Reserves Service) and those belonging to the Ancient and Rare Fund.

At the end of the study session, and in any case before closure, volumes must be returned to the Distribution Desk, where it is possible to collect them again no later than 30 minutes before closure for the following seven days.

On the day when volumes are scheduled to be definitively returned, if they have not been booked by another user it is possible to extend the "Maneat" for a further seven days. If the day of restitution coincides with Sunday or with a public holiday, the possibility of renewal or restitution will be postponed on the first working day.

If volumes are not consulted for more than four consecutive days the "Maneat" automatically expires; the automatic expiration is established also on the day before Easter and summer and Christmas closures.

Warnings and Penalties

Users shall note that it is mandatory to collect the requested volumes and that, at the end of the study session, all volumes must be returned to the Distribution Desk, even those on "Maneat".

Failure to comply with the service regulation entails the following warnings and penalties:

  • The first warning is intended to raise awareness of the correct use of the Distribution Service, it has no impact on the volume request process;
  • The second warning is the last notice without effects on the volume request process;
  • The first penalty inhibits the volume request for 24 hours, only volumes placed in the Reading Rooms and those on "Maneat" remain available for consultation;
  • The second penalty inhibits ad interim the volume request; to regularize the position it is necessary to make an appointment with the Library Management by writing to the e-mail address [email protected]
