Consultation and Loan
The books kept in the five Reading Rooms, mainly the works of major consultation, are on open shelves and therefore directly accessible to the users. Overall, they amount to about 50,000 books, whose call numbers start with one of the following abbreviations:
- SIDIC / S.L.
The books placed in the warehouses have to be requested in consultation at the Distribution Desk, fully compiling the appropriate form in clear, uppercase handwriting. One can request up to 12 books a day, during the opening hours of the Distribution and Handling of Patrimony Service.
Antique and rare books, whose call number begins with Ris. or Inc., have to be requested in the same manner but up to 3 volumes per day and they must be consulted in a dedicated room. Both the request and the consultation of this type of material are during specific hours.
The entire Periodicals Collection, distributed on several spaces, is freely available, with the exception of titles belonging to Special Library Funds, those published before 1861 and those in big format, for which a special request to the Distribution Desk is required. The reading rooms 4 and 5 on the second floor are dedicated to this collection.
At the end of the day it is possible to keep for consultation no more than 5 books, leaving them on the reading tables with the special bookmark “Maneat”, for a maximum of two weeks. All that is placed on the open shelves (books, periodicals, and theses) will be put back on the shelves by the staff at the closure of the Library.
As declared in Art. 4 of the General Rules of the Library, loans are reserved to emeritus and permanent professors, to aggregate and associated appointed lecturers of the Gregorian University, as well as to the Community members of the Jesuit Fathers in residence.
Loans may be made as follows:
- Up to 30 books from the warehouses, for up to 3 months
- Up to 5 books from the reading rooms, for up to one week
The appointed, invited and assistants lecturers can borrow up to 3 books for a month, only from the warehouses and on written request presented to the Librarian from the respective Dean, President or Director.
Ancient and rare books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and loose periodicals issues are not for loan.
It is mandatory to fill out for each book the appropriate form, available at the designated post on the fourth floor of the Warehouse Tower (first floor of the Library).
Interlibrary loan is not provided.
